Fortson Community Association

Purpose:  The purpose of the Fortson Community Association is to promote the recreation, health, safety, welfare, common benefit, and enjoyment of real property located in or about Fortson, Georgia (the “community”)

Three officers have been elected: Chairman, Ron Gibson (Harris County – Brookside Drive), Vice Chairman, Tom Titus (Muscogee County – A Place in the Country), Secretary/Treasurer Mervyn Willoughby (Harris County – Fortson Hills).

Concerning Florida Rock:  To insure issues discussed and agreed to by Florida Rock in the Columbus City Council meeting are addressed and implemented

To insure officials in both counties are aware of and stay engaged in issues affecting our area

To increase the voice and visibility of local residents by serving as a formal bridge for residents to local, state and federal elected officials, commissions, and departments

Recommendations Concerning Florida Rock Rezoning Request:

Fortson Community Association is adamantly opposed to additional rezoning and/or further permitting that would allow expansion of mining operations beyond the CURRENT PERMITTED AREAS in Muscogee County.  We believe the quality of life in north Muscogee / south Harris County has been adversely affected by these operations and expanded operations would only aggravate the situation. While Florida Rock has taken some recent steps to address obvious problems, these steps are minimal when compared to demonstrated past practices which reflect fifteen years of indifference toward the community.

Florida Rock Request  to Rezone September 2007:  Florida Rock is asking to rezone 38 acres on the west side of Fortson Road crossing the Harris County line for mining and Extraction of Stone (a 200 ft setback which contains a berm is proposed in the application).  A request to rezone the remaining 70 acres PLUS the 50 acres “formerly the Smith property” purchased by Florida Rock is anticipated  later.

Fortson Community Association is preparing a presentation for the Harris County Planning Commission and Board of Commissioners.  We will also be contacting Commissioners and Planning Committee members but we need your help.
